Define Leadership...

Leadership is not beating somebody in the head from behind, thats assault! Neither is it dragging people  on a rope, thats what you do to a stubborn cow! Nor would you call the riding on someones shoulders, leadership. It is only as long as you go in riding a donkey! Should you decide to carry others on your shoulders, well, thats not leadership, it is donkey business!

What then is leadership?

  1. Leadership is most definitely not any of those.

It is more about “teaching a man to fish” rather than “fishing for him”. Teach him to fish and you will feed him for life; fish for him, he is bound to starve someday. The leader will coach/mentor but allow the mentee to find his/her path, being vigilant all the while to make sure they are heading in the right direction. A true leader must demonstrate professionalism, ethics of the highest standard and maintain credibility at all times. Honesty, integrity and transparency, a must and no hidden agendas!

“Empathy”, yes, but not to the extent of the leader being the Donkey carrying the whole team on his/her back! That sure is “Donkey Business” or is it more appropriate to say “Funny Business”??? The leader will end up the either “laughing stock” or “talk of the town” for all the wrong reasons!!

All you aspiring leaders, beware! You walk a thin line. However, when you find the right balance, the journey will no doubt be rewarding. x0x
