Powerful negotiations

"The most important trip

you may take in life

is meeting people half way"

- Henry Boyle

Lets face it, none of us really like confrontations, most often people readily admit they are not forceful enough to make the other person see their point of view. Knowing a little about negotiating skills may improve your confidence levels and your assertiveness without the obvious confrontation. Negotiation is about achieving an aim, about giving something in exchange for receiving something. It’s a communication skill that improves with practice.

If you want to be a successful negotiator these tips might come in handy:

1) Learn to flinch
The flinch is one of the oldest negotiation tactics but one that is not used often enough.  By flinching you give a visible reaction to an offer or price. The objective of this negotiation tactic is to make the other people feel uncomfortable about the offer they presented.

2) Understand that people often ask for more than they expect to get
If you understand this phenomenon, then you need to resist the temptation to automatically reduce your price or offer a discount.

3) The man with the most information usually does best
Understand where the other person is coming from.. Ask your prospect more questions about their purchase. Find out whats important to them, their needs, their wants. Always ask questions, learn about your competitor what he may be offering it will help you get a competitive edge.

4) Practice. Practice. Practice.
Lack of preparation, leads to a lack of confidence. Cultivate this confidence by negotiating regularly. Be amiable and determined but not demanding. Condition yourself to negotiate at every opportunity this will help you become more comfortable, confident and successful.

5) Maintain your walk away power
It is always better to walk away from a sale rather than make too large a concession and find yourself in a bigger issue. However, it is particularly challenging to do so when you are in the midst of a sales slump. But, remember that there will always be someone to sell to.

Negotiating is a way of life in some cultures. Make it your way of life.
